The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) is sharing new safety ratings for the all-new 2024 Subaru Impreza and Crosstrek. (CarPro Show host Jerry Reynolds reviewed the new Crosstrek recently.) The IIHS says both redesigned 2024 vehicles earned better side protection and headlight ratings this year.
The 2024 Impreza was the top scoring vehicle of the two, earning Top Safety Pick+ honors, the IIHS's top award. The Impreza earned a good rating in the updated side test. The 2024 Crosstrek is a TOP SAFETY PICK, earning an acceptable rating in the test. Researchers say the side evaluation scores are an improvement for both 2024 vehicles over their 2023 models, both of which earned poor ratings in the new version of the side evaluation launched last year.
To qualify for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award in 2023, a vehicle must earn a good rating in the updated side test as well as in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front and original moderate overlap front tests. Acceptable or good headlights must be standard across all trims, and a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both the daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations must be available.
For the lower-tier TOP SAFETY PICK award, an acceptable rating in the updated side test is enough, and only an advanced or superior rating in the daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian test is necessary.
The IIHS also says both of 2024 models improve their headlight scores, now earning good headlight ratings across the board. Previously, some Crosstrek trim lines had poor headlights and some Impreza trims had marginal ones.
The two vehicles also have standard front crash prevention that earns a superior rating in both the daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian tests.
The IIHS notes that the Impreza is now only available as a wagon, with the sedan being discontinued.
Subaru says that for 2023 it's received an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award for seven models:
