It is a car reviewer’s dream to get to spend time with a Ford Bronco Raptor and a Jeep Rubicon 392, but to have two such badass SUVs on the same week is beyond terrific.
While both are beasts off the road, most people are likely to use them as daily drivers, so that weighed heavily on my mind. The truth is, neither SUV makes any sense, but then again, many of the vehicles we own really don’t make sense, yet we love them.
I am going to do a head-up comparison of these two, but you need to know they are actually quite different in spite of some similarities. They are similar in size, both get horrible fuel economy, both are expensive, and both will climb whatever you want, wherever you want, whenever you want.
One thing that makes the Braptor (Bronco Raptor) different is that the Raptor is very different from the other Ford Bronco models, even the size is different. The same cannot be said for the Wrangler.
Many people have the expectation that I will make a definitive choice between these two, but the truth is, I can’t. Both are wonderful, but I stress they are very different in many ways. I will say that no matter which one you choose, you can’t make a mistake, you’ll love them. These are both vehicles that should be driven for at least an hour before deciding.
Before I am accused of wimping out and not picking, I will tell that for me personally, if these type SUVs were my jam, I would buy the:
You are wondering WHY, I know. It may surprise you to know price would not be a consideration in my decision. When you get up close to or above $100,000, what difference does it really make? A major consideration for yours truly would be that we know the Rubicon 392 is going away. More important to me is ease of getting in and out since I’ve had back issues on and off in my life, the interior noise level, and the enjoyment on the pavement. Those factors, at least for me, all go to the Bronco Raptor. As you know, I am a guy who loves power and exhaust sound, and the 392 is the clear cut winner for both, but on the plus and minus scale, the other factors weigh heavier for me. That may not be the case for you.
For those on the fence between these two insane SUVs, I have done a side-by-side comparison for you to look at and I will give you specs, and in some categories, my opinion one which one holds an advantage over the other.
I hope you have enjoyed both these reviews, I know I thoroughly enjoyed doing them.
