iSeeCars is sharing its list of the Best and Worst States when it comes to Hybrid/Electric Vehicle adoption. Arkansas, Louisiana and New Jersey saw the largest growth in Hybrid/EV adoption between 2019 and 2024. On the flip side, Hawaii, Michigan, and South Carolina had the lowest growth in combined hybrid and electric vehicle sales. The study is based on 1- to 5-year-old cars.
Overall, iSeeCars says fuel efficiency of America’s cars continues to improve - with national fuel efficiency up 11.2 percent. Its researchers attribute this to higher MPG ratings for late-model internal combustion models along with increasing sales of hybrid and electric vehicles. For some perspective, 1- to 5-year-old cars are averaging 27.5 MPG in 2024 compared to 24.8 in 2019. iSeeCars says while a lot of the fuel improvements are driven by government regulations, consumers are playing a role, too, as they look to spend less to fuel their cars. Researchers say while hybrid sales are rising in every state, the overall hybrid segment’s MPG is dropping due to an increasing percentage of hybrid truck and SUV sales.
Arkansas, Washington, and California saw the biggest improvements in average MPG between 2019 and 2024, up 31.7, 21.9, and 19.4 percent, respectively.
Arkansas also leads the nation in Hybrid/EV market share growth. Since 2019, Arkansas’ combined hybrid and electric vehicle market share has rocketed from 0.9 percent to 8.9 percent, an impressive 875 percent growth rate that iSeeCars says clearly contributed to the state’s top rank in rising fuel efficiency. Louisiana ranks second hybrid/EV growth followed by New Jersey.

South Carolina, Rhode Island, and North Dakota had the smallest improvements in MPG while also showing some of the smallest improvements hybrid and electric vehicle sales.
Hawaii, Michigan, and South Carolina had the lowest growth in combined hybrid and electric vehicle sales, though even these states more than doubled their hybrid/EV share between 2019 and 2024.
