The holiday season just may have you thinking about taking a road trip. If you're looking to rent a car for the journey, perhaps something more comfortable for a long trip or with more cargo space to haul your Christmas presents, the American Automobile Association recommends reserving a rental sooner rather than later. AAA says booking well in advance will help you lock in a good rate.
AAA provides a checklist of Do's and Don'ts if travel is in your future for Thanksgiving or Christmas.
AAA says you want to book early. Rates get more expensive the closer you get to your desired rental date. Added bonus: you could even be offered a pre-pay option with a discount if you book early. However AAA warns renters to make sure if cancellation fees apply.
AAA also advises you to give the rental car company your flight information if flying is part of your travel plan. Flight number, airline, ETA. This will they say protect your rental reservation if you're delayed.
You may also want to look into non-airport car rental locations. During the holidays they are likely less busy, while airport locations may be very busy and low on inventory. AAA says check with a neighborhood branch. They may even offer free pickup service.
It's tempting to want to get on your way quickly, but AAA says you shouldn't do so before getting familiarized with the vehicle. Make sure you know how to plug in your charger, connect to Bluetooth and activate maps/navigation.
We would also add that you should so a vehicle walk around and check the vehicle for any damage, like large scratches or other cosmetic issues, document them with photos and let the rental company know, before you leave.
As always, planning it key on road trip. Think ahead about where you'll be stopping to get gas, or where you'll need to charge your EV. AAA offers TripTik and Trip Canvas, two free travel tools to keep you organized and prepared.
