FAA Approves Test Flights For All-Electric Flying Car

Flying cars are something that always interest us here at the CarPro.  So this week we bring you news that an electric flying car is getting the green light for testing from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The all-electric "Model A" flying car is built by California-based Alef Aeronautics.  According to the company's press release,  the aircraft has received Special Airworthiness Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This gives the company legal permission to fly its prototype in a limited capacity under experimental status.

"We're excited to receive this certification from the FAA. It allows us to move closer to bringing people an environmentally friendly and faster commute, saving individuals and companies hours each week. This is a one small step for planes, one giant step for cars," said Jim Dukhovny, CEO of Alef.

As it's also a vehicle, it must also separately meet the safety standards set by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to be tested on public roads.

Alef says the Model A aims to be the first flying car with both street driving and vertical take-off capabilities. The full-size sports car prototype seats either one or two passengers.  The company's website describes it as a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) with "legal speed and other limitations in most states". It's expected to deliver 200 miles on the road, and a flying range of 110 miles.

The Model A is classified as an electrical vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicle.  Alef says the FAA is actively working on its policies for eVTOL vehicles, as well as governing interactions between eVTOLs and ground infrastructure. Alef's says its Special Airworthiness Certificate therefore limits the locations and purpose for which Alef is permitted to fly.

Alef, which is backed by early Tesla and Google investor Tim Drape,  emerged from stealth mode last October when it introduced the Model A.  The company says it's been test-driving and test-flying its full-size prototype since 2019.

The cost to buy one is listed as $299,999. Preorders are now open on its website.  The company reportedly plans to start deliveries by the end of 2025.
