Toyota is showing off a new towing feature. It's a wireless trailer camera system (WCS) that is newly available on the Sequoia and Tundra. Only available as a factory-installed option, Toyota says the new system is designed to enhance the towing experience and after checking it out briefly, I would agree that it does.
I had a chance to check it out at the Texas Truck Rodeo held by the Texas Auto Writers Association in late September. Toyota set up a demo of the new system which was hooked up to a TRD trailer being towed by the Toyota Sequoia.
The camera itself is not small by any means. My initial impressions are that it is very well-designed and looks quite durable.
Here's how it works: you charge and attach the pre-paired WiFI camera to the rear of your trailer.
Then it will stream a live view from behind your trailer on the digital rearview mirror. You can also see the camera view on the multimedia screen.
While you install the pre-paired camera to your trailer yourself, the vehicle itself gets factory installed shark fins for the WiFi system.
As for cost, on the Toyota build site the "Tow Technology Package with Wi-Fi Camera" is a $850 available option for both the Sequoia and Tundra.
