Ford is recalling 1.48 million F-150 pickups in North America, most of those in the U.S, because they could downshift into first gear without warning. In a statement, Ford says it�s aware of five accidents, one of which resulted in whiplash, that are linked to the problem. The recall impacts select 2011-2013 F-150s with 6-speed automatic transmissions, the gearbox at the center of the issue. Ford says these vehicles may experience an intermittent loss of the transmission output speed sensor signal to the powertrain control module, potentially resulting in a temporary, unintended downshift into first gear. This could happen while driving. Depending on vehicle speed, a downshift to first gear without warning could result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. This action affects approximately 1.48 million vehicles in North America, including approximately 1.26 million in the United States and federalized territories and approximately 221,000 in Canada. The vehicles were built at Dearborn Assembly Plant, April 28, 2010 to Oct. 28, 2013, and Kansas City Assembly Plant, May 18, 2010 to Nov. 18, 2013.
