It's National Tire Safety Week and with it comes a great opportunity to get your tires inspected for FREE courtesy of Discount Tire.  The national tire chain will be offering free tire safety and air pressure checks at its 1,200 locations across 39 states from now, June 24th, through July 4th.

National Tire Safety Week is a reminder for drivers to check and make sure their tires and wheels are safe and well maintained before heading out on summer road trips this summer.  To take advantage of the free tire safety checks, you can schedule a complimentary service appointment at any Discount Tire or America's Tire location for regular tire and wheel inspections.

"Keeping drivers safe on the roads is our biggest priority. For us, National Tire Safety Week is one of the ways we showcase our commitment to safety and bring it to life at our stores, online, and in partnership with the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association," said Tom Williams, chief experience officer at Discount Tire. "Ensuring drivers have the best tires for their vehicles to get where they're going safely is essential, especially during hot summer months."

Check out some of the data shared by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association:

  • Drivers logged 3.263 trillion miles in 2023 — up 67.5 billion miles compared with 2022, according to the Federal Highway Administration.
  • In 2024, 40% of Americans report planning to travel more this year, with the most popular trip being to visit friends and family (46%), according to a Forbes Advisor survey.

5 Tire Safety Tips

Discount Tires shares five tire safety tips to keep in mind:

  1. Check your tread: Discount Tire says its experts can check it in seconds using a mobile tread depth scanner.  It's important that your vehicle have enough tread left to provide a safe stopping distance. If can also this yourself at home using the penny test. Place a penny upside down in a tread groove and if Lincoln's head is visible, it's time to replace the tire.
  2. Check your tire air pressure: Discount Tire also says you should check air pressure at least once a month when the tires are cool — especially before a long trip.  Incorrect pressure can lead to poor handling, worse gas mileage, and uneven wear. Also remember that hot summer temps affect tire pressure, for every 10 degrees in ambient temperature change, the tire air pressure changes 1 psi.
  3. Rotate your tires every 6,000 miles or earlier if uneven wear develops.
  4. Replace tires that are six years old or older. Rubber becomes harder and brittle as it ages, so drivers should check the age of their tires on the DOT number stamped on the tire's sidewall. We share more on the DOT number and what the numbers mean here →
  5. Check your trunk to see what equipment your car contains for tire emergencies, such as tire inflation kits that include puncture-coating sealants and air compressors.

If you decide to buy new tires, Discount Tire says shoppers can use its Treadwell online tire recommendation tool - the same search engine they use in-store.  It customizes tire recommendations based on a driver's specific vehicle, where they live, and personal driving habits. From June 29 through July 4, Discount Tire is also offering up to $160 instant savings on select tires and wheels to celebrate Independence Day.
