We know that the new Ford is helping to keep the manual transmission alive by offering one in the all-new 2024 Ford Mustang. Toyota is also adding a manual option to the GR Supra lineup for 2023.
Well, MINI USA is doing it's part, too. It's not just re-introducing a manual transmission in some of its models, it's also launching a new MINI Manual Driving School at the BMW Performance Center in Thermal, CA. MINI says the course, which doesn't appear to be listed on the website yet, welcomes a new generation of manual drivers. And if you just want to sharpen your skills, it's designed for that too. The automaker says the goal is to expand the accessibility and fun of driving a manual and says its new driving school is open to any drivers who want to learn how "to drive manual in an engaging and safe atmosphere."
’’For over a decade, consumers have ranked MINI as the most fun to drive brand in America, which is exactly why we brought back the manual transmission,’’ said Rah Mahtani, Brand Communications Manager, MINI USA. ‘’The course is not only informative but also a fun and challenging learning experience for a new generation of MINI drivers that they will remember forever. ’’
The program will be led by a team of experienced instructors. There are two parts: classroom and hands-on driving experience at the on-site test track. Curriculum focuses on vehicle controls, finding the friction point, practicing smooth starts, stops, acceleration, and more. When the course ends, participants will be tested on a timed course to assess their knowledge.
Last month, MINI announced the MINI Hardtop 2 door range will see the return of the 6-speed manual transmission as a standalone option. It starts with November production allowing MINI owners in the U.S. to once again, purchase a MINI Hardtop with a six-speed manual transmission. The reintroduction of the manual transmission is offered on the Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works variants of the MINI Hardtop 2 Door.
We don't get a ton of manual transmission vehicles to test drive at the CarPro, but we always enjoy it when se do. Check out our test drives of these manually-equipped models:
