Newsweek 2022 Auto Award Winners

Newsweek is announcing the recipients of its 2022 Autos Awards - a list that makes up 33 individual vehicle and brand categories.

Newsweek says its autos team spent the past year evaluating about 200 vehicles. The team rated vehicles two ways: by test driving them and also by comparing their standard and available features and specifications to those of other vehicles in the same category. Vehicles were ranked in seven categories: performance, handling and braking, technology, cargo area, seating, interior appointments and pricing.

Newsweek says it also focused on how well the vehicles lived up to the expectations of the target customer. It asked automakers to provide vehicles for testing and only models that were available were test driven. Every ranked vehicle is on sale today.

Best Car, SUV, Truck and Minivan category winners had:

  • 40 percent of their total rating determined by the test drive score
  • 60 percent by features and specifications

Brand awards were more subjective. In addition to vehicle scores, Newsweek says it looked at changes to the model lineup and other company activities to determine the winners.

Among the 2022 vehicle winners we've reviewed:  the Kia Carnival,  2022 Grand Wagoneer, Volvo C40 Recharge, Genesis G80 and the Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup.
