First came Ford. Next up, General Motors. Now, Rivian. The electric vehicle maker is the latest automaker to announce a deal with Tesla that will allow its customers to use more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers in the U.S. and Canada.  Ford and GM also recently announced deals with Tesla.

Tesla superchargers will be available to Rivian owners as early as spring of 2024 .Like Ford and GM EV customers, in the beginning, Rivian EV owners will need an adaptor to charge their R1T and R1S vehicles. Starting in 2025, Rivian says it will incorporate North American Charging Ports into its vehicles so owners won't need an adaptor.  It will also be built into Rivian's upcoming R2 platform.

Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s Senior Director of Charging Infrastructure said:
“It’s great to see the industry coming together to adopt the North American Charging Standard. By doing so, we’re collectively ensuring all EV drivers have access to easy to use, reliable charging hardware. We look forward to welcoming Rivian owners to thousands of our Superchargers across North America.”

RJ Scaringe, Founder and CEO of Rivian said:
“We’re excited to work with Tesla and to see collaborations like this help advance the world toward carbon neutrality. The adoption of the North American Charging Standard will enable our existing and future customers to leverage Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network while we continue to build out our Rivian Adventure Network. We look forward to continuing to find new ways to accelerate EV adoption.”

Rivian also says it's continuing to expand its own Rivian Adventure Network.

The Rivian RS1 SUV recently became an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, joining the R1T pickup in receiving the designation.
