Toyota To Replace 102,000 Tundra & Lexus LX Engines

Written By: CarPro | Jul 30, 2024 4:13:18 PM

I said on the Car Pro Show when this problem came to light that I felt as if Toyota would do the right thing and replace the affected engines.  Sure enough, now we know the plan.  This is great news for the people who have these vehicles because not only do you get a new engine, but it is also much quicker to replace the engine than to repair it.  Kudos to Toyota for stepping up, this will be an extremely expensive recall for them.-    Jerry Reynolds, Host of the Car Pro Show

Toyota says it will foot the bill to replace the engines in more than 100,000 Toyota and Lexus models.   The action stems from the May 30, 2024, recall of approximately 102,000 vehicles due to the possibility of engine stalls.  At the time, Toyota said it was working on a remedy, which it now has: a new engine. The recall involves certain model year 2022-2023 Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX vehicles in North America.  The models are equipped with gas-only engines and are NOT hybrids.

Toyota says there is a possibility that certain machining debris may not have been cleared from the engine when it was produced. In the involved vehicles, this can lead to potential engine knocking, engine rough running, engine no start and/or a loss of motive power. A loss of motive power while driving at higher speeds can increase the risk of a crash.

For all involved vehicles, Toyota and Lexus dealers will replace the engine with a new one at no cost to customers.

Customers can expect to be notified about this issue by late July 2024.  Toyota also says it will send a second notice once the remedy is available,  anticipated in the 4th quarter.

As we shared earlier, hybrid engines are not part of this recall.  NHTSA notes that:  "If engine failure occurs on a Hybrid vehicle, the vehicle continues to have some motive power for limited distances and the driver receives a continuous audible warning, warning lamps, and visual warning messages."

Toyota's numbers for this recall are 24TB07/24TA07 and 24LB04/24LA04.
