The Occupant Classification System (OCS) may have been improperly calibrated, which may prevent the proper deployment of the front passenger air bag and knee air bag, in the event of a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."RemedyToyota will notify owners, and dealers will recalibrate the OCS, free of charge. The recall involves approximately 18,000 2019 model year vehicles in North America. The RAV4 is equipped with a back-up camera system to show the area behind the vehicle when it is shifted into reverse.Toyota reports there is a possibility a damaged connector in the audio display unit is causing the back-up camera system not to activate. Drivers who do not check their surroundings before putting an affected RAV4 into reverse could be at an increased risk of a crash. Dealers will check RAV4 vehicles to determine if the backup camera system is inoperative and replace the audio display unit if required at no cost to customers. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail by early October. For any additional questions, customers can call the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 800-331-4331. This increases the risk of a car rolling away. VW blames the problem on a build up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts. There is a fix for the problem. Dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board and disable a micro switch. The recall is expected to begin October 11, 2019.
