FORD

The all-new Ford Ranger is seeing its first recall. Ford is issuing a safety compliance recall on certain 2019 Ranger pickups to verify shifter interlock functionality. In the affected vehicles, the PRNDL bezel wiring may interfere with the shifter interlock override, preventing the shifter from locking in the park position and allowing the driver to shift the transmission out of park with the vehicle off and without a foot on the brake pedal.

Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this condition.

  • Recall impacts approximately 3,500 Ranger vehicles in North America, including approximately 3,000 in the United States and 500 in Canada.
  • Affected 2019 Ranger vehicles were built at Michigan Assembly Plant, June 4, 2018 to Jan. 9, 2019.

Dealers will verify shifter interlock functionality by attempting to move the transmission shifter out of park with the vehicle off and without a foot on the brake pedal. If the shifter moves out of park, dealers will look for wiring interference, relocate the wiring and retest. The Ford reference number is 19C02.

KIA/HYUNDAI

Hyundai and Kia are recalling about 168,000 vehicles to fix a fuel pipe problem that can cause engine fires. The problem stems from improper repairs during previous recalls for engine failures. The recall breaks it down to 68,000 Kia vehicles and 100,000 Hyundais.

The fuel injector pipe recall covers certain:

  • 2011-2014 Kia Optima
  • 2012-2014 Sorrento SUVs
  • 2011-2013 Sportage SUVs, all with 2-liter and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines.
  • 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata
  • 2013-2014 Santa Fe Sport

The affiliated Korean automakers are currently under investigation by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which has been trying to figure out whether initial recalls covered enough vehicles.

In addition to the recall, each automaker says it will do a "product improvement campaign" covering a total of 3.7 million vehicles to install software that will alert drivers of possible engine failures and send the cars into a reduced-speed "limp" mode if problems are detected. The new knock sensor detection system continuously monitors for symptoms that may precede an engine failure.

TOYOTA/LEXUS -- TAKATA AIR BAGS

Toyota is recalling 1.7 million vehicles in North America to replace potentially deadly Takata front passenger air bag inflators. The move includes 1.3 million vehicles in the United States and is part of the largest series of automotive recalls in the nation's history.

The recall covers Toyota models including:

  • 2010-2016 4Runner
  • 2010-2013 Corolla and Matrix
  • 2011- 2014 Sienna.
  • 2010- 2012 ES 350
  • 2010-2017 GX 460
  • 2010-2015 IS 250C and 350C
  • 2010-2013 IS 250 and 350
  • 2010-2014 IS-F
  • 2010- 2015 Scion XB

Dealers will either replace the inflator or the entire air bag assembly. Owners will be notified by mail.

Takata inflators can explode with too much force and hurl shrapnel into drivers and passengers. At least 23 people have been killed worldwide and hundreds have been injured.

VOLVO

Volvo is recalling 167,000 XC60 SUVs to fix a problem with the tailgate. The recall impacts certain 2018 and 2019 models.

The issue is that the hatch lid lift system on the electric trunks can loosen, and stop working in cold weather, possibly causing damage.

Volvo says the recall is a preventative safety measure and that it has not received reports of serious incident related to the issue.

The automaker will replace it at no cost to owners.
