Which Automakers Had The Most Recalls In The First Quarter 2024?

Vehicle recalls in the U.S. are up significantly in the first quarter of 2024, according to a new report from BizzyCar.  Its inaugural recall report highlights a surge in recalls with more than 9 million recalls issued in the first three months of year.  BizzyCar calls the increase significant and says it raises major concerns for driver safety and consumer protection.

BizzyCar, an AI-driven software platform that identifies open vehicle recalls for the automotive industry, says its first quarter report, based on an analysis of reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), revealed 105 recalls affecting 9,697,120 vehicles.  The company says this figure not only emphasizes the scale of the issue but also highlights the potential safety risks for millions of American vehicle owners. 

BizzyCar says its analysis provides insight into the manufacturers involved, the specific defects identified, and the broader implications for public safety and consumer confidence in the automotive industry. The company plans to release its report quarterly.

Leading Recall Count  

According to the report, Ford Motor Company leads recalls so far this year with 17 recalls. Ford is closely followed by Chrysler (FCA US) with 15. BMW and Mercedes-Benz each have 8 recalls. BizzyCar says this shows that safety concerns are widespread across various automotive brands.

Tesla Inc. heads the list with over 2.4 million vehicles affected, mainly due to electrical system issues. Ford and Chrysler also reported significant numbers, reflecting broad challenges in the industry:

Fire and Crash Risks

In Q1 2024, BizzyCar reports that three recalls included a "Park Outside Advisory" for 91,193 vehicles, indicating a potential fire risk and advising owners to park their vehicles outdoors to prevent property damage or personal harm. Since January 2023, 4,836,417 vehicles have received this advisory. Furthermore, 8,666,580 vehicles have been affected by recalls that pose a crash risk or increase the risk of injury, emphasizing the urgent need for effective risk mitigation by manufacturers and vehicle owners.

Electrical System, Airbag and Powertrain Issues

The electrical system is notably problematic. The analysis found 26 electrical system related recalls involving 2,775,496 vehicles. Airbags and powertrains, along with visibility components, also show significant issues, indicating a variety of potential hazards.
