Here we take a look at the Toyota Highlander and Mazda CX-5. There are no major updates for the 2023 CX-5. This comparison is equipped with the lineup's more powerful CX-5 Turbo engine. The 4th-generation Highlander was redesigned in 2020 and receives some notable updates for the 2023 model year. The big differences are in size and powertrains. The Highlander offers a third row, the CX-5 just two. The Highlander's third row doesn't fit adults but does allow for more cargo space. The Highlander offers a new for 2023 turbo engine and a hybrid option. The CX-5 offers a standard gas and turbo gas model, but no hybrid. The Highlander turbo engine offers 265-horsepower, more than the CX-5 Turbo. The Highlander also offers more towing capacity.

Our TakeThe Toyota Highlander ups its game considerably in 2023 with a new, more efficient engine and terrific new available multimedia system, proving once again it's a winner in the family-friendly SUV department if you don't need a huge third row that fits adults.
Mazda is known for its engaging driving dynamics, sophisticated style and near luxury interiors. The 2-row Mazda CX-5 delivers on all those fronts. For the most power and driving engagement you'll want the Turbo. The drawback is that, in our opinion, the CX-5's technology needs an update.
