September 13, 2024

On behalf of Kevin McCarthy and the rest of us on the Car Pro staff, thank you for the outpouring of love and kindness shown for his retirement celebration last weekend.  Kevin was truly touched, I could tell.  If you missed either radio show or the tribute to him in last week’s newsletter, it is below.

DFW friends and anyone in the DFW area tomorrow, the 32nd annual Dallas Nationals Car Show is tomorrow, so make plans now to come see Sam Pack’s private car collection, one of the finest in America, FOR FREE!  He opens the museum just once a year to the public, and it is here, details below.  I’ll be there doing the Car Pro Show live 9-2 alone and I’d LOVE to see you!

Below you will find our Annual Salute to the Heroes & Victims of the 9/11/01 tragedy.  You will hear Kevin again as we recount the events of that horrific day.  I have the August 2024 sales report for you today, with my take on everything.

You asked for it, and we deliveredCheck out our all new Car Pro Merchandise on our website.  We really wanted quality stuff, not junk, so do some shopping!  We’ll continue to offer more items as time goes by, click here.

Dog lovers, I have the best vehicles and music for your K9 love and tips for traveling with him or her.  Are you ready for some football?  I have 10 tailgating features for you, and it seems like artificial intelligence is taking over the world, but it is helping to streamline the car buying process, too!  Stories are below.

Don’t miss Kim Komando’s very useful Tips of the Week. She had a lot of really great ones this week, and as always, I encourage you to subscribe to her terrific and very useful newsletter that you’ll get seven days a week.

In advice today, I give you tips and dangers of sharing the road with 18-wheelers.  There may well be some things there that you have not previously thought about.

In reviews, I have the 2024 Ford Bronco Sport Free Wheeling edition.  It is hard to write an objective review on a vehicle you like but find atrocious to look at.  I also review the 53-mile per gallon 2024 Kia Niro hybrid SUV, which is wonderful.  Our Amy Plemons gives you a fantastic full review of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra N.

We have another True Story from a Former Car Dealer below. This is a series of 40 stories written by me, and we’re down to just three more after today. Today, #37 is titled: Selling Out.  I give you my highs and lows of my car business career, and I lay it all out on how I came to the extremely difficult decision to sell my dealerships, which led to my career on the radio airwaves.  I keep no secrets on this story, friends.

Plus, lots of other information you will enjoy, including our videos of the week we talk about on the air all the time!  If you have never been to our FAQ page, take a minute and peruse the categories, something there will interest you for sure.

You’ll find the following stories and more info as you scroll down the newsletter:

sept-14-contents-page-2

We so appreciate all of you who take this newsletter and listen to the show every week.  We know that without you, there is no Car Pro Radio Show.  So always let us know when we can help you. If you have not been there lately, take a look at our website, www.carpro.com, it changes all the time!

Have a terrific week.  See you on the radio!

Our Tribute To The Heroes And Victims of 9/11

shutterstock-9-11-tribute-resize (1)

The way the calendar fell this year, today’s newsletter fell closer to the actual date of the darkest day in American history. Below you will find our Tribute to the Heroes and victims of that horrible day, 9/11/01.

Yearly, I am inundated with requests to post the audio.  We recount the time before the first plane hit the tower, then all the events leading up to the fall of the Twin Towers.

We cap it off with a musical version of me teaching my nephew Connor, who was three years old, the Pledge of Allegiance with the help of the incomparable Lee Greenwood.  Connor just landed his first job as an Attorney in a law firm in Oklahoma City after earning his law degree at Oklahoma University.

I hope you enjoy this tribute.  I vowed that as long as I was on the air, we would play this every year, on or near September 11, in hopes that people would never forget the darkest day in America’s history, the day we lost our innocence.

If you listen to the Car Pro Show, you’ll hear it tomorrow, but if you want to hear it in advance, or share it with someone you know or love, here is the audio.  Bear in mind, some of the timelines we talk about will be off a little, but the events of that day are accurate and chilling and this is one of the best pieces of audio Kevin McCarthy ever voiced:

soundcloud-jerry-911-tribute

The tribute will air tomorrow (Saturday) Central time at:

  • 9:15 AM on WBAP 820 AM/93.3 FM and WBAP.com
  • 11:35 AM on all nationally syndicated stations that air live, OR click LISTEN LIVE at CarPro.com

Did you make a promise to yourself or others 23 years ago to NEVER FORGET?  If so, this is for you.

A faithful listener wrote this and sent it to me 23 years ago, the day after that horrible day, and I wanted to share it with everyone.

In Case You Missed Kevin's Goodbye Broadcast

jerry-kevin-carpro-show
If you missed the news last week, Kevin McCarthy, my Trusty Sidekick for 23 years, retired. We gave him the sendoff that he so deserved on both the DFW Car Pro Show and the nationally syndicated version as well.  In fact, the entire Dallas show was pretty much a celebration of one of the greatest careers in radio.

This was our announcement in last week’s newsletter, and be sure to watch the fantastic video put together by our Executive Producer, Amy Plemons:

You can listen to the WBAP broadcast in DFW below, and the celebration continued in the first hour of the national broadcast. You can catch it here as well:

Thank you again Kevin for 23 years of broadcast excellence on the Car Pro Show.  I couldn’t have done it without you.

trucks-shutterstock-resize-adviceCarPro Advice: Sharing The Road With 18-Wheelers

My father was a truck driver for as long as I can remember. I was proud of what my Dad did for a living, but as someone who drives a lot, I see a lot of truckers these days who drive too fast, drive too aggressively, seem to have trouble staying in their lane, and I often see them bully their way into traffic. Here is a list of don’ts to be conscious of while traveling the American road with large trucks.

Kim Komando's Useful Tips & Info of the Week

Besides the Car Pro Show and our weekly newsletter, my other favorite radio show and newsletter is Kim Komando’s. We are on many of the same radio stations across America. She does for her listeners and newsletter subscribers exactly what I endeavor to do: Give you useful information to keep you up to date on the latest in cars, only she does it with technology and there is nobody who does it better. Not sure how she puts out a top-notch newsletter seven days a week, but she does.

Here are some various tips & information I picked up from Kim’s newsletter this week I hope you find as useful as I did:

graphics CarPro-4

  • Apalachee High School shooting: A teacher says a newly installed tech system called Centegix prevented even more casualties on Sept. 4. Staff carry digital cards that instantly alert law enforcement to a physical threat on campus. Officers arrived at the school within two minutes of the first shots going off. We need this to roll out nationwide now.

  • 1 hour a week of phone usage leads to a 10% higher risk of cardiovascular disease. So, uh, yeah, that’s pretty much all of us, right? This is a classic example of correlation, not causation. Using a phone doesn’t impact your heart directly, but too much sitting on your butt sure does.

  • Spot the fake: Change Healthcare is offering free credit monitoring after this year’s massive data breach (paywall link). A reported one in three Americans had their insurance info, Social Security number, health conditions and more leaked. The credit monitoring is through IDX. If you get anything else in the mail, it’s a scam. Just a reminder: If you haven’t frozen your credit yet, here are the steps.

  • Fix anything, anywhere!  Travel prepared like a good little scout. (Fun fact: I was a Boy Scout leader. It’s a long story.) Bring these nifty gadgets to fix:

  •  Please be quiet: Amazon has banned delivery drivers from chatting too much or even singing along to music. A cab camera monitors mouth movements, and if there’s too much lip action, they get a “distracted driver” warning. Amazon says it’s for safety, but drivers aren’t thrilled. Yup, 24/7 surveillance is part of that gig.
  • Gotta wing it: Imagine soaring a couple of hundred feet above the ground in your own personal aircraft. They’re called “short-hop adventure crafts” and they’re taking off. (Sorry, had to.) The electric BlackFly requires only seven days of training before you (not me) can take to the skies. Watch it in action.

True Stories From A Former Car Dealer

jerry-wards-auto-coverA few years ago, I started writing a series of True Stories From A Former Car Dealer.  Over 40 weeks, I wrote about experiences I had from my days as a dealership owner.  Some will make you laugh, others will make you cry.  The reaction was beyond my wildest expectations.

For our new subscribers, and for those of you who may have missed one or perhaps simply forgot the details, we’ll bring these to you in the order they were written.

This was a hard one to write Kids.  In this episode, I tell you about my difficult decision to get out of the car business in 2006 and why.  I really open up on this one.  I tell you about my victories through the years and tell you about the agony of defeat.  I tell you about the pain of driving away from my dealership that I built, for the very last time.

  Jerry's Video of the Week

Jerry YT Graphic-Sep-11-2024-11-21-51-8022-PM

I am mystified by this video.  If you can figure it out, please let me know!  In this 2 minute video captured by a dash cam from the car behind, you see a 22-year-old man driving a new Subaru very erratically.  He’s all over the road, causes a horrific crash, and ends up with the Subaru on its roof.  He also had a younger female passenger inside.  Must have been drunk, right?  The San Diego Police say no drugs or alcohol.  So, what happened here?  Maybe someday we’ll find out, but his parents are not talking!
