2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited Review

Written By: Amy Plemons | Jun 21, 2024 9:48:34 AM

Editor's note:  The original version reported the passenger seat as 6-way power adjustable. It's been updated to 4-way power.

My how time flies. Why is seems like just yesterday I was reviewing the all-new 2020 Hyundai Sonata, and singing its accolades no less.  Fast-forward to 2024 and I'm behind the wheel a notably "refreshed'' Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited.  The updates aren't small, either.  In fact, it actually sort of feels all-new to me though it's not being dubbed as such.

Exterior

While not a complete redesign, the Sonata gets notably bolder looks for 2024.  In fact, Hyundai calls it the sportiest and most aerodynamic Sonata ever, something that based on looks alone, I can't argue with.

The front end is a dramatic change thanks to a much more aggressive-looking black mesh grille.  Also new: an integrated seamless horizon lamp with wide-set hidden LED headlights that stretches across the front end.  Hyundai says it's designed to convey a more futuristic feel. The tail end makes a statement, too, with new high-tech-looking H-lights and twin-tip single chrome exhaust.  Headlights, daytime running lights and taillights are all LED.

Since we're not talk complete re-design, the mid-sized sedan retains its overall shape, and wide, low-slung, road-hugging stance (we're talking just 5.3 ground clearance. ) My test vehicle wears Transmission Blue and rides on 17-inch Eco Spoke alloy wheels.

Powertrain

One thing that hasn't changed is Sonata hybrid performance. It remains a powertrain focused on efficiency.  It's 2.0-liter 4-cylinder hybrid engine is paired with an 6-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain delivers 192-horsepower. Would I like to see an updated, more powerful hybrid system and transmission?  Yes, I would. (For reference, the all-new 2025 Camry hybrid makes 225 horses with front-wheel drive models, 232 hp for all-wheel drive..)

Sticking with its efficiency theme, for the first time, the Sonata hybrid is equipped with paddle shifters and a regenerative braking mode for even more fuel effiency.

Interior

Major changes greet you when you open the door to this roomy midsize SUV.  First, off, the cabin now features a "floating theme" similar to the one you'll see in other Hyundai models.

The top-of-the-line Limited affords you the nicest interior with the most goodies. I really liked the looks of the two-tone Dark Gray/Camel interior along with the comfortable leather-trimmed, power front seats. The driver's seat offers 8-way power adjustment, and 4-way power for the passenger. Both are heated and ventilated and have great headrests.

I still can't get quite used to the Sonata's somewhat oddly shaped, at least to me, steering wheel but its leather looks and feels great.

Moving to the second big change, let's talk about the gear shifter. It's been relocated from a shift-by-wire on the center console and is now mounted on the steering wheel column, like you see in the 2024 Kona.  I do like the change.  The console now offers an extended armrest, if you will, thanks to the added space.

The back seats continue the Limited's nice ambiance.  The 60/40 rear split seats are cushiony and comfortable. A drop-down center armrest offers dual cup holders and there are manual sunshades. You'll get 15.6 cubic-feet of space in the trunk and I do like the cleverly concealed button to open the trunk.

Limited features also include a panoramic sunroof and 64 color ambient lighting. The entire lineup is equipped with dual-zone touchscreen climate control, four USB-C ports and a 12-volt.

Technology

Technology gets a huge update. As in a new available panoramic curved display with dual 12.3-inch screens (on the N Line and Limited.) One is an infotainment touchscreen and the other is the digital driver display.

Multimedia graphics are great and so is system responsiveness. All Sonata's are also now available with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.  The system also features Sounds of Nature.

Dynamic Voice Recognition is also excellent. The Limited/N Line also benefit from a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system.

Ride and Drive

The Sonata offers an engaging, sportier ride with nice off-the-line acceleration even with the 192 horsepower. While its suspension feels on the stiffer side,  it handles potholes smoothly and with ease. While responsive, steering isn't super tight making the Sonata easy going to drive and maneuver.  Fuel economy is a fantastic at 47 MPG combined.

Safety

All 2024 Sonata's are equipped with a long list of standard driver assistance features which include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-traffic Collision-avoidance Assist, Blind-spot Collision Assist, Safe Exit Warning, Safe Exit Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Rear Occupant Alert.

The Limited is also equipped with Remote Smart Parking Assist - a parking assist system that I have confidence in.  The available 12-inch color head-up display is also terrific.

It's also equipped with available Highway Driving Assist,  Hyundai's semi-autonomous system, though from the specs it doesn't look like it's the latest iteration.

What You’ll Pay

There is no MSRP on my vehicle Monroney,  but using Hyundai's build site I get an estimated MSRP of $38,560 which includes optional carpeted floor mats.

Verdict
