2025 GMC Hummer 3X All-Electric SUV Review

Written by Jerry Reynolds | Jan 20, 2025 7:24:24 PM

So, just what is it I am reviewing this week?  Well, it’s a large SUV with a menacing appearance.  It is an incredibly capable off-road SUV.  It’s a convertible of sorts. With the acceleration it provides, you’d have to call it a Super Car.  It’s over a hundred grand, so it’s a luxury vehicle, right? With fuel economy roughly equal to a Prius, is it an economy vehicle?  The answer is, this 9000-pound behemoth SUV is all those things and more. It is the all-electric 2025 GMC Hummer SUV and it doesn’t make any sense at all, but it had me grinning ear-to-ear for an entire week.

Exterior

I mean would you look at this thing?  It has huge 22” wheels mounted on 35” off-road tires, amazing ground clearance, factory fender flares, tow hooks on the front and rear to pull your buddies out of the mud, and at night it lights up like the Christmas tree in Times Square.

People move out of your way when they look in their rearview mirror.  Suffice it to say, if you drive a Hummer, you are going to get a lot of looks and your picture is going to be taken often. Put your hand over your heart because it even has an American flag on the side. In a first for me, the windshield is so large, it takes 3 wipers.

I think the front view is my favorite.  The entire grill lights up all the way across, with LED lights on the outside and six lit squares that spell out HUMMER.  Three marker lights are in the center of the roof, and low on the right side of the grill is the only place except the very rear that it tells you it is a GMC.  If you look around the vehicle, the letter H is spelled out in numerous places, as on the headlights.

Powertrain

So, what’s under the hood of this big boy?  Nothing!  It has a frunk (trunk in front) but under the floorboard are 3 very large and very heavy batteries (hence, the name 3X.  The regular version only has two batteries and surprise!  It’s called the 2X). On this 3X, there is one electric motor in the front and two in the back, creating a 4-wheel drive SUV. The Hummer batteries are liquid-cooled lithium-ion, rated at 170.0 kWh.  The onboard Level 2 charger that is built-in is 19.2 kW, but at a DC Fast Charger, you get nearly 300 kW.

The result of this GM Ultium electric setup?  830-horses, and torque of (sit down) 11,500 pound-feet.  0-to-60 time is just under 3.5-seconds, about the same as a Corvette Z06.  It will tow 7,500 pounds, at least for a little while. It goes without saying that the acceleration is insane when you stomp the accelerator pedal (never call it a gas pedal in an electric vehicle), the front end jumps up, the rear squats, and you will be pinned to the seat as things going by become nothing more than blurs.

Interior

Open the driver’s door to reveal a truly luxurious interior, which was a bit of a surprise.  I expected a more minimalist interior as you often see on a true off-roader, but it has beautiful soft-touch materials throughout the cabin in a white and black color scheme.  There is a huge pass-through center console that you see immediately, and the rectangular gauge cluster and infotainment screen makes you think NASA designed the interior.  First impressions are excellent.

The door panels are very attractive with black and white hues, ambient lighting, and beautiful stereo speaker grills give you a visual map of the Sea of Tranquility, where Apollo 11 landed.  This theme runs throughout the Hummer SUV, and you’ll see a very large map on the cargo area mat in rear.

The 12.8” gauge cluster right in front of the driver is huge.  It’s big enough to not need a head-up display.  It is colorful and configurable on the left and right sides.  It will give you the battery range prominently, and you can easily see where your battery is most being used.

Center dash, up high, is a big 13.4-inch screen that is command central to operate just about everything. You operate the Google infotainment and navigation system, which includes a 14-speaker Bose Premium audio, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also on the screen, you access the trailer towing page, vehicle settings, and much, much, more.  It will take you a good deal of time to swipe through all the screens.

The system is one of the fastest I’ve ever experienced. The voice recognition works very well.  There are other settings from the screen to turn on the regenerative braking which allows one-pedal driving, you can check range, and find a nearby charging station.  I utilized the one-pedal driving for my entire week, and just loved it. There is a paddle on the steering wheel to set the sensitivity, and as the vehicle slows down, it sends a charge to the batteries.

I have to touch on the UltraVision camera system. UltraVision provides various camera views to help maneuver in almost any situation. Choose from 17 camera views on the SUV—including waterproof underbody front and rear-facing cameras that provide real-time views of the terrain under the Hummer.  The resolution on all views of the camera is sharp and clear.

Under the big screen are neat switches for all climate controls including the heated and cooled front seats.  On the center console itself are the electronic gear shifter, a wireless phone charger, two cup holders, USB-C ports, a power outlet, and the rotary drive mode selector.  The drive modes include: offroad, terrain, tow/haul, normal, and the configurable MyMode.  Each mode displays on the center screen with a nifty video.  Also, from the same dial you can engage the CrabWalk, rear-wheel steering, and you can also raise and lower the entire vehicle from there.

From anywhere inside the Hummer, look up and you’ll see four deeply-tinted glass panels called the Infinity Roof.  Each panel can be independently removed easily.  When they are all stored away in their covers, it becomes a T-Top convertible.  Simply slide them into the covers that are provided and store them away in the frunk for a complete open air experience.  They go on and off very easily.

As you head to the back seat, they are as comfortable as the front ones are, leg room is massive, and the head room, even with the sky panels is terrific.  Very tall people will have plenty of room and be quite comfortable.  There is a fold-down armrest with cup holders, and back seat passengers control their own temperature, there are air vents, the rear seats are heated, there are USB-A and USB-C jacks, and a 12V power outlet.

Utility

Let’s move to the very rear where you’ll find a power tailgate that swings open with the push of a button under the left taillight, from the dash, or from the key fob.  It opens (with the huge spare tire and matching wheel attached) really wide to easily place cargo in the cavernous 82 cubic-foot cargo area that has the Sea of Tranquility map on the rubber floormat.

There is a little storage area under the floor for valuables.  This power-opening rear door is significant because it is very heavy with the spare on the back. In a really nice touch, it power closes as well!  I also love that the rear glass is power and can be lowered without opening the tailgate.

Standard Features and Options

Just about everything comes standard equipment, including everything I’ve touched on above.  This includes a trailer brake controller, trailering package, keyless entry, remote start, heated steering wheel, dual power front seats, power tilt steering wheel, power tailgate and frunk, the sky panels, and running boards.  It also comes with GM’s terrific Super Cruise semi-self-driving system and a 3-year subscription.

On Super Cruise:  GM has driven and mapped out almost 750,000 miles of divided highways across America to bring you the Super Cruise system.  On an approved road, you’ll get a green light on the dash.  Set the cruise control, hit the Super Cruise, and the vehicle literally drives itself. If you want to change lanes, turn on your blinker and it will make sure there is enough room and will change lanes for you. The system can also be used when towing a trailer.

A small camera on the steering wheel monitors your eyes to make sure you are engaged, and if not, you get a verbal warning.  After that, the car will start to slow down, the flashers come on, and it will safely get you off the road and Onstar will call for help.  This is in case the driver is incapacitated. I’ve tested many of these systems, and still this one performs best in my opinion.

The only two options on this Hummer 3X are the Meteorite Metallic paint at $625, and a dual-level charging cord is $350.

On the safety side, you get adaptive cruise control, lane change alert, automatic emergency braking, park assist, automatic high beam headlights, blind spot monitoring and warning, rear cross-traffic alert, rear pedestrian alert, reverse automatic braking, safety alert seat, and rear seat reminder.

Charging

Let’s talk charging times.  At a DC fast charger, you can get to a 90% charge in just over two hours. I have a Level 2 charger at home, and it will pick up 30-miles of range per hour. Or you can plug it into a regular 110 outlet.

Just know that if you do, you’ll gain 3.5-miles of range per hour.  That will take 72-hours to get to 80%, or 3 days.  Please, take my advice and get a home charger.  Your compatible GMC EV can provide power to your properly equipped home in a blackout.  Add the GM Energy Enablement Kit to the available GM Energy PowerShift Charger to get bi-directional charging capabilities.

Cool Features

It’s time for me to point out some of the really cool features of the Hummer SUV.  These are the things that entice people to spend over 100 grand on a super-large SUV:

    • CrabWalk-you’ve seen the commercials with the Hummers in the snow, driving diagonally. 4-Wheel Steer enables the maneuvering flexibility of CrabWalk. At low speeds, CrabWalk turns the rear wheels in phase with the front wheels, allowing the SUV to move diagonally to help traverse tight trails.  Is it cool?  Hell, yes.  Will you ever use it?  Doubtful.  It’s a fairly useless novelty, but all my friends and family wanted me to take them for a ride to experience it.  I will say it feels pretty cool when you are behind the wheel.

  • WTF-which stands for Watts To Freedom.  Think of it as Launch Mode.  Engage Watts to Freedom to unleash the Hummer EV SUV’s astounding acceleration and propel yourself from 0-60 mph in approximately 3.5 seconds with the 3X Hummer.
  • Extract Mode- To get over or out of a tough spot, initiate Extract Mode and the Hummer activates its Adaptive Air Ride Suspension to rise approximately 6" to surmount tough obstacles like traversing boulders or fording water.
  • Torque Vectoring- The system features torque vectoring to enable maneuverability and traction to help reach destinations over challenging terrain—including climbing 60-percent grades (forward and reverse), scaling 18" verticals and when in deep water.
  • Air Ride Suspension-Air ride adaptive suspension automatically adjusts the ride height depending on conditions. It responds to on- and off-road by adjusting damping levels to make handling and ride dynamics even better.  It makes a huge difference in the driving experience and works in tandem with the Extract Mode.
  • Regen On Demand- Regen On Demand allows you to recapture energy simply by holding the steering wheel’s Regen On Demand paddle when deceleration is needed. The Hummer uses regenerative braking to convert the energy created from braking into electricity to recharge the battery.
  • Auxiliary Switches- Customize up to six auxiliary switch buttons on the SUV’s touch-screen display with unique icons and names for your aftermarket accessories. Connect things like light bars, ditch lights, winches and more.
  • Full Underbody Armor- Utilizing steel plates and shields around the drive unit and battery pack, full underbody armor, skid plates and rocker protectors help protect Hummer in off-roading environments.

Ride and  Drive

The acceleration of EVs always takes me by surprise, you’d think I’d be used to it by now.  For a heavy SUV, this one is insane.  Of course, the exhibition of acceleration will knock that battery range down quickly, but wow is it a rush.  The interior quietness is exceptional, and GM went to great lengths to make sure of that.

MSG and MSRP

Fuel economy is not good for an EV compared to most others.  Of course, no other EV weighs four and a half tons either. It is rated at 58 MPGe in the city, 46 MPGe on the highway, and an overall combined rating of 52 MPGe.  MSRP as equipped is $107,920 before dealer discounts and factory incentives, and as with all EVs, the discounts and incentives are plentiful.  The Hummer does NOT qualify for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit due to its price.  As I always suggest for first-time electric vehicle buyers, if you can lease, it is a good idea.  We don’t know where the EV market is headed, and leasing takes all the guess work out of it.

Verdict

Look, the Hummer is long, wide, and tall, it’ll barely fit in a lane, much less a garage, and it’s no picnic to park.  Nothing about this vehicle makes any sense. I owe General Motors and Prestige Auto (press fleet delivery company) a debt of gratitude for sending it to me because I have loved every damned minute of driving this beast.

  • What I liked most:  Where to begin?  Looks, acceleration, amazing features, and the overall vibe you get from driving it
  • What I would change:  Nothing.  It is what it is.  You’ll hate it or you’ll absolutely love it.  Hey GMC, you want to have a HUGE hit on your hands?  Drop the 6.2 V8 or a diesel in the Hummer and you won’t be able to produce enough of them to meet demand.  Trust me on this.
